The Vanden Brink lab traveled to Omaha, Nebraska to attend the annual ISBNPA conference held on May 20-23. ISBNPA is the leading international research community in behavioral nutrition and physical activity that “aims to stimulate and promote innovative and impactful research in behavioral nutrition and physical activity to improve human and planetary health and well-being worldwide”.Dr. Vanden Brink and senior research associate Joy Kim collaborated on a symposium session on “Lifestyle Strategies for the Early Treatment and Prevention of Adolescent PCOS”, along with Dr. Lisa Moran of Monash University and Dr. Melissa Olfert of West Virginia University.Dr. Vanden Brink co-chaired the session, opening the presentations with an introduction to PCOS and how adolescence is an ideal window for intervention. She also presented on nutrition, food security, and PCOS risk in adolescents and if there is an opportunity for early intervention in this population, sharing preliminary analysis of two studies conducted in the lab.
Joy presented on barriers and facilitators to lifestyle change in adolescents newly diagnosed with PCOS, goal setting with the RD, sharing the results of a qualitative analysis of registered dietitian nutrition notes.Graduate students Joelle Sfeir and Amber Chang also joined the conference, listening to keynote sessions from world-leading researchers and other sessions with fellow researchers providing key information and discussion on recent progress in theory, methods, and new findings related to physical activity and nutrition behavior.
